WLOPA Eradicates Vermin
Wolcott safe from infestation

AP..... Today, the annual WLOPA Wimp Vermin Field Target shoot took place.  The purpose of this event was to provide an early spring warning to any and all vermin contemplating nesting on WLOPA property.  A total of 23 of WLOPA's finest Verminator Specialists along with Verminators from as far away as Rochester, NY participated in the event.  To provide all Verminators an opportunity to participate, an EarlyBird Special was conducted in the fog filled woods where vermin have been recently observed.  At times, it appeared that all out war was taking place, especially as the black nosed Bat vermin tried to retreat into its cave under the cover of significant smoke screen.

Even with all its concealment, the bat population at WLOPA suffered significant casualties as well as did the crow, mouse, skunk, and rat vermin that were located and destroyed on the course of fire at Wimp Vermin 2006.

By the end of the day, all vermin had been accounted for, duly dispatched, and awards of meritorious achievement offered to all Verminators of record.  The following is a complete accounting of the origins, and events surrounding Wimp Vermin 2006.

Wimp Vermin???  Origins of the name......(Reuters)

He looks serious, as well he should.  Chief of all Verminators and inspiration for the Wimp Vermin event, Peter Morris contemplates his next move in the chess game of disease ridden vermin species.   The game of Wimp Vermin originated when Peter chose to rid his homestead of a variety of rodent vermin using a low-powered Beeman R-7 airgun.  Hence, the name 'Wimp' to commemorate the taking of his first rat with such a low powered airgun.

Because low power shooting dictates precise pellet placement, Peter had an idea that a field target game of shooting nothing but vermin targets with low-powered airguns could offer a challenging alternative to more -common field target events using higher powered airguns.  Being true to his low power prowess and a vermin theme, the game of 'Wimp Vermin' was born.

Now, each year, the first airgun field target event held at WLOPA comemorates Peter's vision and quest for vermin quarry through the 'Wimp Vermin' Field Target event.  Only airguns with a muzzle velocity of 750 feet per second  or less are allowed in the competition to make pellet placement relative to pronounced trajectory absolutely critical to success.

Early Bird Special.... a new Wimp Vermin venue....(London)

Over the years' WLOPA has been primarily a shotgun shooting organization.  However, the gun club did have one high appeal aspect that airgunners have found irresistable....a swamp!  So, for the past couple of years, the WLOPA airgunners have developed the swamp into one of the premier airgun field target shooting venues in the NorthEast.   This is where the annual Wimp Vermin shoot occurs.

As the brush was cleared away, a number of tried and true Trap gunners began to notice the vermin ambushes taking place on the airgun range.  As the trap activities at WLOPA start at about the same time as field target activities, it became apparent that another venue was needed to allow shotgun shooters to also participate in the airgun shoots.  Out of this need was created the EarlyBird special.

WLOPA verminators Hans Justus and Tom Mercadante observe as Dawn Lango lays the heat onto a 30 yard rat target.

The EarlyBird special allows multi-event shooters at WLOPA to begin a round of field target airgunning at 8:30AM so that they can finish airgun activities just as shotgunning activities are about to start.  Note the seriousness in the above picture.  Verminators take their job very seriously because they never know when they will be called upon in their local communities to manage community vermin issues.  Thus the annual Wimp Vermin shoot provides opportunity for Verminators to sharpen their skills in constant preparation of potential endemics, pandemics, and epidemics such as the Bird Flu or the Plague.

Verminating......it is a family affair (AP)

A familiar face to the Wimp Vermin scene is Robb White and son Colin.  At this year's WV shoot, Rob shot his Anschutz 10 M gun while Colin used dad's Air Arms Cyclone .22.... Every father knows that some day, the son will surpass him at his own game......but so young????   Colin shot a blazing 34/40 to father Robb's 29/40 at WV-06!!!!!   Way to go Colin!

Pounded Paddle donates Rat Vermin Target to Most Persistent Shooter (AP)

As in years past, the Bingham Brothers of Pounded Paddle targets provided a special RAT target of their design to the most persistent shooter.  This year's award went to one persistent Tim Delaney.  Watch out for this guy down the road as he has vermin extermination potential for the next generation of shooters!

Daddy can't hit the target without his favorite gun

Because Wimp Vermin uses low-powered airguns, technique is super-critical to success.  A week before this year's Wimp Vermin, WLOPA Verminator George Blass shot exceedingly well with his Daystate MK 3 in competition against some of the best in the Field Target games. But as George learned from his daughter, Jackie....daddy has a little bit of a challenge when it comes to the Wimp Guns!

George Blass takes aim at a mouse on Lane 1 while daughter Jackie provides encouragement.  Although she missed the lens of the Camera today, George's better-Half - Eve also shot well at today's match making Wimp Vermin a truly family affair.
