A message from the members of WLOPA to newcomers to our facility

We at WLOPA realize that there are a lot of people who would like to try out the shooting sports, but feel a bit intimidated approaching total strangers for help in learning something new.    At sometime or another, we were all in that situation.   It's not uncommon for people to think things like.....

Am I good enough at this not to look like an idiot?

I wonder if my equipment will stack up to what others use?

Do I really want to spend time with a bunch of people who are that immersed in the gun culture?

Are these people so immersed in their activity that they'll just ignore me making it an awkward situation?.....

and for many women, it's just a question of......

Is it safe to be participating in a sport that is predominantly male dominated?

Well, first and foremost, if you are interested in learning more about the shooting sports or just curious about trying out some aspect of  shooting  then  WLOPA is the place for you.  You are more than welcome to just show up and observe others during matches and ask questions. But often it is much easier to get involved if there is someone at the WLOPA facility who is there to specifically meet with you, show you around the facility, and answer any questions you may have.

So, to make it as easy as possible to introduce you to WLOPA and what we have to offer, our recommendation is to drop us an email or give us a call before coming out to the facility.  We'll arrange for someone to be there just to spend the time with you and make sure that you get all of the information you need about Connecticut's premier gun club.  And if you want to jump right into one of our shooting sports, but aren't sure if you want to invest in the equipment or are not sure if you have the appropriate equipment, that is not a problem.  By calling in advance, we can arrange for everything you need to participate with confidence that your equipment is up to par with what the seasoned shooters will be using.

If you are a woman who is interested in learning more about the shooting sports or trying your hand at the various disciplines and would feel more comfortable with another woman shooter, let us know that too because we have a growing number of female members who really know their stuff when it comes to shooting.

Finally, if you are uncertain about your abilities and skills in the shooting sports relative to some of the expert shooters that you will run into at WLOPA, do not let that be a hindrance to getting involved.  Our first and foremost objective at WLOPA is to have an enjoyable time in a safe manner and environment with the use of firearms. You could step up to the line, compete, and score a perfect ZERO and nobody there is going to think any less of you for it.  In fact, we're probably going to cheer and encourage you on, because we've all had that opportunity to compete and score that perfect ZERO at some time or another!!!  Getting out there, shooting, and having fun is what is important to us at WLOPA....the competition part can come later if you decide that is the road you want to take.

The bottom line, is don't let the unknowns keep you from visiting us and trying out the shooting sports.  We'll link you up with a guide who is well versed in safe gun handling who is willing to take the time needed to allow you to feel comfortable and confident in your ability to participate in WLOPA shooting activities:
